Stan Hock has over 35 years' experience crafting compelling wine brand messaging for consumer, trade and media audiences. He began his wine industry career in the late 1970s working for a Berkeley, CA wine importer. In 1979, Stan and several partners opened Trumpetvine Wines, a fine wine shop in dowtown Berkeley specializing in boutique California wines. It soon became a mecca for wine lovers throughout Northern California and its witty, essay-form newsletter became required reading for thousands of San Francisco Bay Area oenophiles. As a result, Stan was invited to write about wine for numerous publications, including Wine & Spirits magazine, the San Francisco Bay Guardian, San Francisco Business Times and Focus magazine. In 1988, Stan left Trumpetvine Wines to become a full-time wine writer and associate editor of Practical Vineyard & Winery magazine, among the wine industry's leading trade journals.
In 1989, Stan accepted an offer to become public relations director of Sutter Home Winery in Napa Valley, then one of the fastest growing wineries in the world. Over the next 13 years, as Stan ascended to the position of Senior Communications Director, Sutter Home tripled its production, acquired and developed numerous new brands and morphed into Trinchero Family Estates, one of the six largest wineries in the U.S. During his tenure, Stan served as the company's spokesperson, instigated all public relations activities, managed media relations and wrote, produced and disseminated all promotional materials for trade, media and consumer audiences, including press releases and kits, consumer brochures and newsletters, branded websites, corporate videos and video news releases, direct marketing communications, sales presentation and training materials, product information sheets, ad and label copy and owner/senior management speeches and correspondence.
He also wrote or co-wrote three books (Harvesting the Dream, The Sutter Home Wine Country Cookbook and Harvesting the Dream: The Rags-to-Riches Tale of the Sutter Home Winery.) In addition, Stan supervised trade hospitality for all Trinchero Family Estates brands and represented the company at industry, trade and consumer events.
In 2002, Stan left Trinchero Family Estates to create his own company, Words on Wine, which provides copywriting, editing and consulting services to wineries large and small throughout California and the Pacific Northwest. Over the past dozen years, Stan's client list has included a Who's Who of American wine, including Blackstone Winery, BeringerBlass Wine Estates, Cakebread Cellars, Constellation Wines, Delicato Family Vineyards, Domaine de la Terre Rouge/Easton Cellars, Don Sebastiani & Sons, Flora Springs Winery, Folio Wine Partners, Gainey Vineyard, Mendocino Wine Company, Montevina Winery, Mount Eden Vineyards, Ravenswood Winery, Renwood Winery, Seps Estate, Shenandoah Vineyards/Sobon Estate, Silver Oak Cellars, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, Trefethen Family Vineyards and Trinchero Family Estates. He also has worked extensively with wine-oriented public relations, design and technology agencies, including Folsom & Associates, Freerun Technologies, HKA Design, MJR Media, RM&G and Voicebox Creative.
